A Brief Guide to Church Architecture
This illustrated guide to church architecture will help you spot the various phases of building in our churches, many of which contain different ages of construction. With examples from across Lincolnshire, you will see what to look for from Anglo Saxon towers to the proliferation of Victorian Gothic Revival, you will
soon know if you are looking at ancient or more recent work.
Lincolnshire has a wealth of ecclesiastical architecture from across the centuries. This guide will help you learn what you are looking at and to identify the changes that have taken place over time. Along with the Glossary of Church Architecture Terms, you will soon be looking at windows, walls, pillars, porches, arches and altars with more knowledge and will be able to identify the differences to look for. You will be amazed at the variety to be found in this county and will start your own ‘I Spy’ collection.
If you are still not sure if that window is Early English, Perpendicular or a Victorian interpretation of Gothic, the Church Buildings Team would be happy to help and can point you towards further examples.
