A Glossary of Church Architecture
This glossary will help you understand what is meant by various terms used relating to church architecture. It is an overview to help you look more closely at the immense ecclesiastical heritage of this county and hopefully spark your interest to find out more. It complements the Brief Guide To Church Architecture, which is also available
If you want to know what an apse, a crocket or a hatchment is or understand the difference between a gargoyle and a grotesque, then this is the document for you. Aimed to give you an overview of terms rather than be a comprehensive academic tome, this easy to use glossary explains what the different terms mean and where you might find them.
Designed to be used alongside the Brief Guide to Church Architecture, your knowledge of church architectural terms will increase as will your interest (and potentially your Scrabble score). See what you can spot next time you visit one of our many architectural gems.
If you are still not sure if that capital has a water leaf detail or a stiff leaf detail, the Church Buildings Team are happy to help you identify what you are looking at and where to find further examples.
