Raising an Alleluia: Easter Celebrations Across Greater Lincolnshire

Let the Church proclaim…he is risen! Church communities across Greater Lincolnshire were alive with the miracle of the empty tomb as they celebrated Jesus’ rising from the dead.

There were plenty of passionate displays of this promise of new life; new hope; new beginnings. Here we take a look at just some of the ways we marked the moment that is at the heart of our faith.

Brigg Passion Play

Local churches in Brigg collaborated together in an ecumenical retelling of Christ’s journey to the cross – with a modern twist. It all took place in the very heart of the town surrounded by a large crowd from the local community.

The churches involved came from all sorts of different backgrounds, and included:

St Mary’s Church, Brigg (Roman Catholic Church) – St John the Evangelist, Brigg (Church of England) – Brigg Methodist Church – Oikos Brigg (an ecumenical Christian community / organisation).

During the play there were even ‘grab bags’ being offered to multitudes of people which contained hot cross buns and an Easter Message from the churches.

Immediately afterwards, people were invited to come together for an ecumenical service of Good Friday Prayers at St John’s Church and reflect on the play. The church discovered that many people had never intentionally visited a church before. It has been described has very moving.

And not to forget the addition of a fish and chips community meal which was held at Brigg Methodist church!

Our Diocesan Transformation Fund – which gives churches a boost of funding to make projects a reality – played a part in allowing the passion play to take place. We’re heartened that the funding had such a significant impact through this unique opportunity.

Nettleham Easter Worship

In Nettleham, Easter celebrations were filled with young people who volunteered to prepare for this important time of worship. They breathed new life into traditional celebrations. It was such a welcoming encounter that the church was packed with people.

Lincoln Cathedral

Over at the awe-inspiring cathedral, there was plenty of times to mark Easter. Easter Day saw Sung Eucharists, Festal Evensongs, and more. And of course on 31 March, there was a diocesan celebration at the Chrism Eucharist with the blessing of oils and renewal of ordination vows.
